On October 22, 2025, the new water reservoir adjacent to Katoj Park in Majuro Atoll was officially opened in a handover ceremony attended by H.E. President Dr. Hilda C. Heine, Hon. Minister Gerald Zackios, H.E. Ambassador Soma Hirohisa, JICA Resident Representative Ms. Ono Yukari, key government officials, traditional leaders and landowners and special guests — students from the Grade 5 Long Island Elementary School.
The new reservoir brings an additional 11 million gallons increasing the total capacity of the Plant C water storage to 47 million gallons. The initiative was made possible through a grant aid agreement between the government of Japan and the government of the Marshall Islands, underscoring the collaborative efforts for sustainable infrastructure development.
The project improves water security and increases resiliency against the rising impacts of climate change and seasonal drought.
In his welcome remarks, the General Manager of Majuro Water & Sewer Company (MWSC), Damian Capelle stated, “The increased capacity ensures a 80 day (47 million divided by 25 gallons per day for 23,256 people) supply of water to Majuro Atoll.
The handover ceremony was well coordinated and organized by the MWSC team to ensure a smooth official opening.
This is an important initiative that should eliminate any excuse not to visit the shower.
