The groundbreaking ceremony of the new Coastal Protection: Eletutu Beach and Breakwater Project was met with brief showers on the morning of July 30, 2025. Despite the rain, the ceremony proceeded culminating with project stakeholders, traditional leaders, and various government officials performing the symbolic shoveling of soil to signify the commencement of the important project that is designed to provide improved coastal protection measures to critical infrastructure.
The project was initially earmarked as a subproject under Component 2 of the Urban Resilience Project (URP) but was later moved to Component 3: Resilient Public Facilities as the project addresses the need for resilient coastal protection to the existing critical assets where the site is in proximity to the main road, Public Service Commission building, residential buildings and businesses. Tonkin & Taylor, the design and supervision firm for this project will be working with Pacific International Inc. (PII) to carry out the construction of a new stepped seawall and breakwater.
