PMU Manager James Myazoe and PMU Contracts & Planning Specialist Melvin Dacillo joined other representatives from the Republic of the Marshall Islands (EPA, MPWIU, MOFBPS, and NDMO) on a Technical Workshop and Knowledge Exchange on Sustainable Aggregate Sourcing and Resilient Urbanization for Pacific Atoll Countries in Nadi, Fiji.
The event, held on August 19-21, 2025 at the Sheraton Denarau Island Resort, also gathered participants from Kiribati, Tuvalu, & Maldives along with other regional and development partners i.e. Pacific Island Forum, Pacific Regional Infrastructure Facility, and The Pacific Community and was sponsored by the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Government of Japan.
The workshop addressed critical challenges in securing sustainable aggregate supply, a pressing issue for RMI, and explored topics including future demand, domestic and international sourcing options, environmental and social risks, construction practices, material use and practice in construction, urbanization in atoll capitals, business models, and resource ownership. The participants were able to listen to experiences, ideas, and lessons learned from other atoll nations. The RMI delegation highlighted the urgency of establishing policy and framework models, procuring tools and equipment, strengthening local capacity, and collaborating with partners to advance sustainable solutions.
